Yes, we all have different docks to leap from but I think I may not have been clear in my point about how someone else always has it worse than you do. What I mean is that if you have the luxury to consider something like photography an option as a direction in life than you have it better than many people in the world. It's likely that while you might not be completely sure where your next meal is coming from, the chances that you are not going to eat that next meal are slim. Basic life needs are most likely met by the time one can consider something like photography. The bank account might not be overflowing, the roof over your head may not be glamorous, the car you drive may be old, but at least you have these things. If you don't have them, you can't really contemplate taking this kind of leap.

However, you are 100% correct that we need to figure out our own accounting systems for our own lives. We must each measure where we are in our own system and comparing that situation to others is of course, futile.

Note my comment was an addendum, not a criticism… Figuring out our personal accounting systems is a big part of helping us determine what is important to us; everyone has their own systems, their own risks, their own “worst cases”, their own “practical” life choices and career paths. I only meant to add to the point that “risk” is more subjective than objective, to continue to help people think about their choices and life decisions.
