Conversations across the globe

by sam on 7 September, 2009

Today I had a long conversation with Taylor Davidson (http://twitter.com/tdavidson) about the ideal camera on Twitter:

tdavidson do people really “want” bigger cameras? no, and that’s why the 4/3 innovation is important IMHO. related: http://bit.ly/PWeEq

sambr @tdavidson if the M9 has a sensor to live up to that glass it’ll be one of the best things ever. now, i need to go get some lottery tickets

tdavidson true @sambr; but the broader innovation outside of a single camera will have the largest impact. DSLRs = SUVs, IMHO

sambr yes, @tdavidson you are right, but sometimes an SUV is the best vehicle for the journey. other times you need a truck (medium format, etc)

sambr and @tdavidson, in this case, i’m willing to give up a few miles to the gallon for image quality

tdavidson but that’s exactly it @sambr; sometimes SUVs (and DSLRs) are the best. but not for all drivers (or shooters), and not for mass market

sambr i agree, @tdavidson that the mass market will accept limitations. and so do i, but so far the 4/3rds system hasn’t overcome enough for me

tdavidson @sambrthe point isn’t that 4/3 is the solution, only that it will demonstrate that DSLRs aren’t the mass market solution either

tdavidson in any case @sambr, pros won’t give up DSLRs, but the mass market will.

sambr @tdavidson i agree. smaller systems with full control will become the norm for the masses once the high quality sensors get cheap enough

sambr @tdavidsonand i’d love to have a smaller system for everyday use. i’d love to have the quality in a leica sized system.

tdavidson me too, @sambr; but perfection is a myth; limitations “ship” : ) (related: http://bit.ly/1fawoU )

This got me thinking a bit about gear. It’s nice to have the gear but what’s really important is having a camera with you. There are too many times when I’m out and there is a great photo but I don’t have my fancy dslr with me.  What good does that camera do me if it’s in a bag at my house? So, all that worrying about pixel count and low light capabilities don’t help if the camera isn’t there. I wish I had the money to get the new Leica M9 that I hear is coming out soon.  A small camera with great glass.  Too bad it’s going to cost more than a small car.  So I’ve decided to keep my fancy dslr with me all the time and not miss those shots I’m always seeing.

All this the result of a conversation with a guy traveling to Bratislava who I haven’t met, but have conversed with on numerous occasions.  If we are open to it, the internet can be a great resource bringing us together.

Shawn Rocco's Cellular Obscura project is a great example of how “gear is good, vision is better”.

And thank you for engaging, of course…

One additional point: David Sanger (@davidsanger) chipped in with a couple good comments, demonstrating the example of exposing conversations to the public…

Yes, David was chiming in along with us, but i left his additional comments out because I didn't really notice them until a few hours later. However, you are right that having the conversation in public does allow for this. The more minds taking part, the better. I'm really curious to see the blog post you alluded to in a tweet on this subject.
